What are B Meets?

B Meets are open to all Hunter Mill Sharks. B Meets are meets designed to give developing swimmers a chance to compete and improve their stroke skills. It’s an opportunity for our Sharks to gain experience in a competitive and supportive environment. Swimmers are encouraged to try new events each meet and try to compete in each event for their age group over the course of the season.

Hunter Mill participates in the Vienna Developmental League so our swimmers get the chance to swim against friends and neighbors from the various Vienna pools. Our B Meets are not NVSL sanctioned and are not scored. There are no relay events at B Meets.

When are B Meets?

B Meets are held each Monday evening throughout the season. Warm-ups for the home team is 5:00 - 5:20 PM followed by warm-ups for the away team from 5:25 - 5:45 PM.

The meet will start at 6:00 PM.

Eligibility Rules

Swimmers are encouraged to swim up to 2 events at each B Meet.

1. Swimmers who DID NOT swim in the previous Saturday’s dual meet

  • May chose any 2 events in the following B Meet.

2. Swimmers who DID participate in the previous Saturday’s “A” Meet

  • May swim the same stroke(s) that they swam at the A-meet. We do strongly encourage swimmers to swim alternative strokes from their previous A-meet (i.e., strokes that you did not swim the previous Saturday).
  • Swimmers that place 1st, 2nd, or 3rd placein the prior A-meet may swim as unofficial swimmers in the following B-meet. An unofficial swimmer may not swim for place, but their time is recorded and considered official (i.e., may be used in the ladder, for seeding in Individual Divisionals, etc.)

Additional Information to Consider

Our B Meets will have multiple heats per event per age group. For instance, there may be 25 girls in the 9-10 age group swimming backstroke. The swimmers will be divided into multiple heats, each heat with five or six swimmers. All event times will be ranked together to determine the standings. It is possible, therefore, to win or place in a heat, but not be the 'event winner'. Make sure your swimmer understands this so they’re not disappointed if they “win” on Monday but aren’t selected to swim on Saturday. If you ever have questions about whether or not your child’s time is fast enough to be considered for an A-Meet, please speak to the Head Coach or a Swim Team Rep.

Official B Meet Rules (Updated April 2024)

The purpose of the Vienna Area “B” meets is to provide opportunities for developmental swimmers to set personal records and earn place ribbons in competitive swim meets. With such opportunities for success, we hope to promote a life-long love of the sport of swimming for all participants, and to provide training and experience for potential “A” meet swimmers.

The Vienna Area “B” team representatives from the seven pools making the league are the deciding group for all rules and rule changes. Any rule changes will be discussed with all seven pool “B” team representatives and decided upon. The seven pools include: Shouse Village, Hunter Mill, Lakevale, Vienna Aquatic, Vienna Woods, Dunn Loring, and Cardinal Hill.

  1. All seven teams in the Vienna League agree to schedule at least four B-meets within the season, swimming against a different team in the league each time, unless a repeated match-up is necessitated by a tri-meet. There can be a scheduled bye-week for all teams which can be used to hold an intrasquad meet or other team function as decided by individual teams.
  2. All meets will be dual meets unless tri-meets are necessary.
  3. Meets will be held on agreed upon Monday evenings in June and July. All meets will start at 6:00 p.m. unless an earlier or later start time is agreed upon by both teams meeting on a specific date. Meets should finish by 9:00 p.m. Meets canceled because of weather may be rescheduled for the next day, Tuesday, if agreed upon by the teams involved. (Teams should note possible conflicts with dive meets when rescheduling.) Meet schedules and the bye-week will be determined at the spring “B” coordinators’ meeting. (Note: B meets will not be held the week of July 4th when the federal holiday falls on Monday, July 4th or 5th).
  4. All individual events of the NVSL will be swum, with the addition of 6 & Under 25 meter freestyle and backstroke. IMs may be swum each week. At a minimum, IMs will be swum during the last two meets of the season.Timing of when the IMs will happen in the meet will be per the host team's discretion. Any changes in event order should be agreed upon beforehand by the team reps.
  5. Participating teams may enter all qualified swimmers. As many heats as necessary will be run to accommodate the swimmers. To expedite the meet, events may be combined to fill the lanes. Teams should consider screening swimmers’ stroke selections to balance swimmer growth with efficiency in officiating the meet.
  6. Swimmers are eligible to be awarded a place ribbon in each week’s B meet as long as they did not win a first, second, or third place ribbon in any individual event in the previous Saturday’s regularly scheduled NVSL “A” meet.
  7. A swimmer is limited to two events and cannot repeat any stroke within the same meet. IMs count as a stroke.
  8. Swimmers that place 1st, 2nd, or 3rd placein the prior A-meet may swim as unofficial swimmers in the following B-meet. They may swim the same stroke(s) that they placed with at the A-meet. Exceptions to this rule may be discussed and agreed upon by the participating team reps prior to the start of the meet. We do strongly encourage swimmers to swim alternative strokes from their previous A-meet (i.e., strokes that you did not swim the previous Saturday).
  9. An unofficial swimmer may not swim for place, but their time is recorded and considered official (i.e., may be used in the ladder, for seeding in Individual Divisionals, etc.)
  10. Cards of unofficial swimmers must be marked “unofficial” in red ink.
  11. At a minimum, the best six times of all heats combined in each event, excluding the unofficial swimmers, will determine 1st through 6th place ribbon winners. In cases of ties, duplicate ribbons will be given without skipping the following place ribbon. Other competitors and swimmers who DQ will receive competitor ribbons.
  12. The following officials are required:

HOST TEAM: Referee, Starter, Announcer, Chief Timer, 9 lane timers (12 at VAC), 2 Stroke and Turn Judges (3 at VAC), 2 Clerk of Course, 2-3 table workers, 1-2 runners, and 2 marshals.

VISITING TEAM: Administrative Referee (to expedite DQ slips, especially for meets with lots of swimmers), if possible, a second certified Administrative Referee (in the event a team doesn't have enough/nor want additional certified admin refs, the two teams will determine the best plan for that meet), Assistant Chief Timer, 9 lane timers (12 at VAC), 2 Stroke and Turn Judges (3 at VAC), 2 Clerk of Course, 2-3 table workers, 1 runner, and 2 marshals.

Both teams will use best practices to ensure that DQ slips can be matched to timecards, so as to not cause confusion for the data team, especially if the teams decide to implement a second Administrative Referee.

Timers must be at least 15 years of age.

Volunteer Needs for 6 vs. 8 lane Pools:

(3 S&T Judges/team)

  1. Each team will supply its own place ribbons and competitor ribbons and is responsible for printing the individual ribbon labels.
  2. Entries for each meet should be processed so that teams choosing to exchange data can do so no later than 8pm on Sunday, with some flexibility for our data coordinators’ personal schedules. If merging data, the visiting team will send an entry file to the host team, and the host team’s data coordinator will send merged meet files (with and without times) to home and visiting team reps on Sunday evening. Each team will bring printed meet programs for its coaches and team reps. The host team will print programs for the table (4), officials (7 or 9), announcer (1), and clerks of course (4). Team reps, coaches, and the table receive programs with times. Officials, announcers, and clerks of course receive programs without times. Exceptions to this timeline or division of work may be agreed upon by the two teams as appropriate. Note that the purpose of merging data is simply to provide deck officials more visibility into the size of each event. Some teams prefer to seed B Meets by time, and others do not. Team reps should agree in advance to an approach for forming heats (e.g., by time, by friend groups, random, a combination of these) and communicate this approach to their clerks of course.
  3. Pre-printed cards shall be prepared prior to the meet using the Hy-Tek software and brought to the meet by the coaches or team reps. Cards should indicate the swimmers’ ages and gender to facilitate card review for table workers in combined heats.
  4. After the start of B-meet warm-ups, any changes to timecards are not permitted. Any extenuating circumstances must have the approval & initials of the B-meet coordinator to ensure that eligibility rules have been followed. This is to prevent timecards from being inaccurately marked to accommodate last minute changes (e.g., timecards of ineligible swimmers not being marked as “unofficial”, swimmer swimming more than 2 events etc.). B-meet coordinators are the only team representatives who have the authority to write new timecards.
  5. The host team rep should contact the visiting team rep no later than Wednesday of the week prior to the meet. Discussion will confirm rain
date if needed, warm-up times, event order of strokes, any necessary accommodations for disabled swimmers or spectators, parking and
logistical arrangements, and any variances from regular procedures.
  6. The host pool will make all arrangements for the efficient conduct of the meet.
  7. To expedite the completion of the meet, announcements of meet event results (place 1-3) should not delay race events from starting. Whenever possible, the broadcast of race results should take place simultaneously to events being swum or when there is an official pause in the meet, such as a pause due to a swimmer DQ. Race results should be announced as they become available
