What are 'A Meets'?
A Meets are the sanctioned competitive NVSL Division meets held each Saturday morning during our swim season. There are a total of 5 A-Meets.
A Meet swimmers may compete in up to two (2) individual events, plus team relays.
Seeding times will be based on the best time from the season. Typically, the three swimmers within an age group with the fastest individual times for each event (free, back, breast, and fly), are asked to represent Hunter Mill at that Saturday’s A Meet. Since the teams we swim against for A Meets are based on team strength, and not location, the A Meets can be anywhere in Northern Virginia.
A Meet warm ups generally begin at 8:00 AM for the home team and 8:25 AM for the away team. Meets begin at 9:00 AM and typically last until Noon. The home team has lanes 1, 3, and 5 while the visiting team has lanes 2, 4, and 6. Generally, the fastest swimmers, are placed in lanes 3 and 4, the next fastest in lanes 5 and 2, and the next fastest in lanes 1 and 6.
A Meets also include relays. 8 and Unders do a freestyle relay, while older swimmers will swim medley relays (one swimmer swims each stroke). We generally end the meet with a mixed-age freestyle relay. The Mixed Age Relays are swum by, in order of, an 11-12 year old, a 9-10 year old, a 13-14 year old, and a 15-18 year old.
Planned Absences
It is essential to let the Head Coach and Team Reps know if your child will not be available for an A meet. All families (whether or not you anticipate swimming in an A Meet) should record any planned absences in TeamUnify, which will be used by the coaches in their A Meet selection process.
How Are A Meet Swimmers Selected and Notified?
Swimmers qualify for A Meets based on their times at Time Trials and at A and B Meets, as well as the coaches’ evaluation of how the team can best match up against our opponent for that week. Because we try to put our fastest swimmers in our Saturday A Meets, a great Monday swim can completely change the Saturday roster!
The swimmers selected for our A Meets may change from week to week because of improved times or absences. Sometimes there are unfilled spots, especially in some of the older age groups, and a younger swimmer may be asked to 'swim-up' in the older group.
Here's a quick rundown on how swimmers are selected for A Meets and how families are notified:
- By Tuesday, HTM Head Coach will review an updated list of every child's fastest times and indicated availability in TeamUnify.
- HTM Head Coach will share the swim roster to Swim Team Reps on Tuesday or Wednesday.
- Swim Team Reps will notify families via email and/or text to confirm a swimmers participation on Saturday's A Meet. Note: the text will not say the names of the swimmers, so if you have multiple swimmers, you should tell us if any are unavailable.
- If a swimmer is no longer available to participate at the A Meet, the family should contact the Swim Team Reps ASAP.
- Head Coach will fill in any holes created by absences. They may even be moving kids into different races. As soon as we know the names of any new swimmers, the team reps will text your family and let you know.
- On Thursday evening, Swim Team Reps will exchange our swimmer list with our Saturday opponent.
- Once both teams are in agreement of the swim lineup, a Swim Meet Heat Sheet will be emailed out to all participating families. This sheet will generally go out by Friday morning, at the latest.
